The Peconic Jitney - run by the same Hampton Jitney bus service that anyone who has traveled Sunrise Highway out to the Hamptons has inevitably come across - will take passengers from Sag Harbor to Greenport. The proposed ferry will eliminate the need for south form travelers having to travel around Riverhead and back out to the north fork and vice versa. 

 

The ferry revives a similar service from 2012. 

 

According to Google Maps, that trip takes about an hour and fifteen minutes. A route that involves two ferry services and a trip across Shelter island is estimated at one hour and nine minutes.

 

The proposed Peconic Jitney would take passengers only (no vehicles) from Greenport to Sag Harbor in about 45 minutes skirting around Shelter Island.

 

According to a story in Dans Papers, the Suffolk County legislature already approved the ferry license. Ferries would run every two hours from mid-June through mid-September. Adults one-way tickets would cost $20 ($37 roundtrip), tickets for minors are $15 one-way ($30 roundtrip) There are additional fees for pets ($1) and bikes ($5).

 

The only hurdle is where to dock the ferry. Both villages have yet to sign off on use of their docks, Long Wharf in Sag Harbor and Mitchell Park in Greenport.

 

While the proposed launch date for the 53-passenger ferry has already come and gone, the villages are still debating whether to allow the service to operate and from where.
