The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced today that it has begun the second phase of the rollout of new inspection stickers to licensed inspection stations statewide, meaning that the majority of those stations will now begin using the new system.
At the same time, DMV announced a milestone for the Vehicle Inspection Program, with more than 100,000 inspections conducted since the new sticker system was first rolled out early this year.
“We are very pleased with how the transition to this new inspection system has gone so far, and we look forward to that continuing,” said DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder. “These print-on-demand stickers will go a long way toward reducing and even preventing potential fraud and helping law enforcement get better information about the vehicles they see every day on New York’s roads.”
Phase 2 involves shipping the print-on-demand sticker system to thousands of New York State-licensed inspection stations. This new system prints the vehicle identification number (VIN) and mileage information right on the sticker itself. The sticker color will continue to change from year to year to provide additional information about whether a vehicle’s inspection is up to date.
The transition to the new system is expected to continue through the end of 2023, though customers may continue to see valid inspection stickers in the previous design until late 2024.
DMV is continuing to work with its law enforcement partners to get the word out about the new stickers and to ensure that they are recognized as legal and valid.
