Wyandanch, NY - July 1, 2016 - Suffolk County Police First Squad detectives are investigating an incident during which a man was injured after a firework detonated in his hand in Wyandanch last night.

Several people were setting off fireworks in front of AC Auto Repair and Diagnostics, located at 92D Wyandanch Ave., when a man lit a mortar firework that detonated in his hand at 10:06 p.m. Two of the man’s fingers were severed, one finger was partially severed and another was injured on his right hand during the explosion. The man, 35, of Brentwood, was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip by Wyandanch Rescue for treatment of his injuries.

The Suffolk County Police Department would like to remind residents that the use and possession of fireworks—including sparklers—is illegal in Suffolk County. The department wants people to have a safe Fourth of July and encourage people to leave fireworks to the professionals.
