The Fourth of July, our nation’s birthday, is meant to be a fun and safe holiday. County Executive Bruce A. Blakeman and Police Commissioner Patrick J. Ryder would like to remind the residents of Nassau County that fireworks awareness and prevention are important issues to discuss with your family.
It is important to mention that ALL fireworks are illegal in Nassau County. The possession, use, or sale of fireworks, including sparklers, is a violation of New York State Penal Law, and may be punishable as a misdemeanor or a felony. Parents should talk with their children about the destructive outcomes that can occur from playing with fireworks.

- In the United States during 2022,at leastninepeople died using fireworks and an estimated 11,500sustained fireworks-related injuriesthat needed to be treated in a hospital (CPSC). About 74 percent of those injuries occurred in the weeks before and after the July Fourth celebrations, which should come as a reminder to everyone who handles fireworks of the extreme dangers.
- Children 15 and under suffered 29% of the injuries. The majority of injuries occur to the hands and fingers followed by the legs, eyes, head, face and ears.
