Hempstead, NY - July 6, 2016 - Tenants in Hempstead have organized to challenge slumlords over living conditions. Housing violations are putting the safety and health of Hempstead residents at risk. The lack of backup generators in buildings in case of damaging storms is just one example (legislator Syela Bynoe has introduced legislation to address this issue). Village of Hempstead Deputy Mayor Luis Figueroa will join tenants to ask for buildings to be safer from fires, install generators for elevators in case of emergencies and for landlords to stop using rent money to pay fines and fix violations.
