Uniondale, NY - July 7, 2014 - Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano. Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Lawrence Eisenstein and North Shore-LIJ Health System invite residents to attend a free Health, Fitness, & Sports Expo on Saturday, August 9th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Mitchel Field Athletic Complex, located at 1 Charles Lindbergh Boulevard in Uniondale.
Former New York Mets and Yankees pitcher, Dwight “Doc” Gooden, will also return to his hometown of Nassau County to speak with residents about his longtime, and often public, struggles with drug addiction and the path to recovery. Gooden, along other famed sports personalities, will be available for autograph and photograph opportunities.
The Expo offers new sports and fitness activities, including: a PGA golf clinic, a New York Cosmos soccer clinic for children ages 4-12, Double Dutch tournament and special martial arts demonstration. A free lifesaving seminar will instruct participants on how to administer Narcan – an overdose prevention nasal spray. The Expo also includes health, sports, fitness and human service providers, medical screenings, a healthy food pavilion and inflatable games and amusements.
“The Health, Fitness and Sports Expo is the perfect, healthy alternative to video games, and a way to get outside to become active and learn how to lead a healthy lifestyle,” said County Executive Mangano. “I urge residents to attend the Health Expo and spread the word of wellness - mental, physical and emotional wellness through sports, exercise, good nutrition and regular medical screenings. With your help, we can create a healthier Nassau County. ”
The Expo is co-sponsored by Winthrop University Hospital, the PGA TOUR Superstore, Health Plus, Bethpage Federal Credit Union, NuHealth, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Blu Chip Marketing, Hofstra University, the NY Cosmos and PinkTie.org.
