AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 PM EDT THIS EVENING The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for the following areas: All five boroughs of New York City, and Westchester, Rockland, Nassau, and Suffolk counties. Until 11 PM EDT this evening. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of Ground Level Ozone. The New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. A toll free air quality hotline has been established so New York residents can stay informed on the air quality situation. Man Arrested for Leandra’s Law Following Crash in Farmingville

Suffolk County Police have arrested a North Bellport man for driving under the influence of drugs with his two children in his vehicle following a motor vehicle crash.

Farmingville, NY - July 9, 2015 - Suffolk County Police have arrested a North Bellport man for driving under the influence of drugs with his two children in his vehicle following a motor vehicle crash.

Kevin Nichols was driving a 2003 Mercury Mountaineer southbound on Nicolls Road when his vehicle left the roadway and overturned south of Portion Road at approximately 6 p.m.

Nichols’ two sons, ages 1 and 2, were in the vehicle and taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for evaluation but did not appear injured. Nichols’ front seat passenger, Louis Villafane, 25, of North Bellport, was admitted to Stony Brook University Hospital.

Nichols, 44, was charged with Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with a Child Passenger 15 Years Old or Younger (Leandra’s Law), Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs and two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

Nichols was admitted to Stony Brook University Hospital and will be arraigned at a later date.

The children were released to a family member.

The vehicle was impounded and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information this crash to call the Sixth Squad at 631-854-8652.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
