New York Blood Center (NYBC) will be hosting a blood drive with the Farmingville Fire Department on Friday, July 12th from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The blood drive will be held in memory of Norman Neill Jr., a beloved member of the Farmingville community and former Farmingville Fire Commissioner and Chief.
Norman was an impactful figure in the Farmingville community, serving 60 years with the Farmingville Fire Department, including leadership roles such as Chief of the Fire Department and as a member on the Board of Fire Commissioners. He was also the Chairman of the Department’s blood drives with NYBC for many years.
To encourage blood donations, each participating blood donor at this blood drive will be entered into a sweepstakes to win one of three pairs of New York Mets tickets. NYBC announced a blood emergency last month, following a holiday weekend of low donor turnout and the start of the critical summer period for the blood supply. Seasonal travel, school breaks, and a rise in traumatic accidents during the summer months often strain the blood supply and lead to shortages.
Blood donors can give every 56 days, and platelet donors can give twice per month. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently lifted several blood donor eligibility restrictions. To view current eligibility guidelines, visit nybc.org or call 800.688.0900.
WHEN: Friday, July 12, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
WHERE: Farmingville Fire Department on Friday, 780 Horseblock Road, Farmingville, NY 11738
WHO: Blood Donors, Volunteers, Farmingville Fire Department Representatives and New York Blood Center Representatives
WHY: It only takes one hour to donate, and a single donation can save multiple lives. Roughly one in seven hospital admissions require a blood transfusion. Those in need include: cancer patients, accident, burn, or trauma victims, newborn babies and their mothers, transplant recipients, surgery patients, chronically transfused patients suffering from sickle cell disease or thalassemia, and many more.
To make an appointment at this blood drive, donors can call 1-800-933-2566 or visit this link. Can’t donate blood? You can still support NYBC’s mission by texting ‘NYBC’ to ‘20222’ to give $25.
