Wantagh, NY - July 10, 2016 - Seventh Squad detectives, the Burglary Pattern Team, and Second Squad detectives report the arrest of a Suffolk County man for criminal possession of a weapon that occurred in Wantagh on Saturday, 07/09/16 at 4:56 A.M., in addition to multiple burglaries that occurred throughout Nassau County.
According to detectives, Charles Stewart, 30, of Huntington, was observed by a witness running out of a rear yard located on Bellaire St. in Wantagh. Seventh Precinct police officers located the defendant in the area, inside a minivan, being operated by co-defendant Diana Maben, 43, of Huntington. As officers stopped the defendants and were attempting to question them, Stewart fled the scene on foot. The officers gave chase and apprehended the defendant. Defendant Maben was placed under arrest at the scene. A loaded handgun was recovered in the auto.
A Seventh Precinct police officer was injured during the foot pursuit and sustained abrasions and shoulder pain. No other injuries were reported.
On Friday, 06/24/16 after 9:00 P.M., defendant Stewart entered a residence on Beech St. located in Wantagh, through a window, while the residents were asleep. He removed jewelry, a wallet and car keys from the home. He then stole the car, which was parked in the driveway. The victim’s vehicle was recovered on 07/04/16 by Nassau County police.
On Tuesday, 05/23/16 after 11:30 P.M., defendant Stewart entered a residence on Pompano Lane located in Massapequa, through a sliding glass door, while the residents were asleep and removed a pocketbook and car keys. The defendant took the car, which was parked in the driveway. The victim’s vehicle was recovered on Monday 06/06/16 by Suffolk Police.
On Friday, 12/26/14 at approximately 1:30 A.M., defendant Stewart entered a residence on Pine Drive in Woodbury through an open garage door. While inside he removed a Coach handbag and two sets of Galaxy lights.
On Monday, 05/02/16 at 4:30 A.M., defendant Stewart entered a residence on Southern Pkwy. in Plainview by using a garage door opener that was inside the victim’s unlocked vehicle. While inside the residence the defendant was unable to find any valuable property and fled the scene.
On Monday, 05/02/16 at approximately 5:00 A.M., defendant Stewart entered a residence on Stauber Dr. in Plainview through and open garage door. While inside, he removed a safe and a hover board.
On Wednesday, 05/04/16 at approximately 3:00 A.M., defendant Stewart entered a residence on Audrey Ave. in Plainview by using a garage door opener that was inside the victim’s unlocked vehicle. While inside, the homeowner awoke and Stewart fled the scene.
On Monday, 05/09/16 at approximately 4:30 A.M., defendant Stewart entered a residence on Market Drive in Syosset by using a garage door opener that was inside the victim’s unlocked vehicle. While inside, he removed a wallet containing cash and a hover board.
Stewart is being charged with seven counts of Burglary 2nd Degree, two counts of Grand Larceny 4th Degree, Criminal Possession Weapon 2nd Degree, Criminal Possession Weapon 3rd Degree, and Assault 2-W/Intent to Cause Physical Injury to Officer/Fireman. Maben is being charged with Criminal Possession Weapon 2nd Degree. Both defendants will be arraigned on Sunday, 07/10/16, in First District Court, Hempstead.
