Suffolk County, NY - July 11, 2017 - Due to the finding of bacterial levels in excess of acceptable criteria, Shirley Beach in Shirley is closed to bathing and Copiague Harbor Beach in Copiague, which closed on June 30, remains closed.
Additionally, the beach closures have been lifted for the following beaches, as results of recent samples collected show the water quality to be within acceptable levels:
- Lake Ronkonkoma (Islip Town Beach)
- Fiddlers Green Association Beach in Lloyd Harbor
- Benjamins Beach in Bay Shore
According to Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Dr. James Tomarken, bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat.
Beaches will reopen when further testing reveals that the bacteria have subsided to acceptable levels.
