Northport, NY - July 13, 2016 - Suffolk County Legislator William R. Spencer, M.D. was joined by students, parents, and business mentors at the Northport Historical Society last week to celebrate the kick-off of the 2016 “Lead by Example” Summer Internship Program! The annual initiative, which is in its fifth year, connects students with local businesses for a six week summer internship where they have the opportunity to explore a potential career path and attain hands on, practical experience in a real-life work environment.

“The “Lead by Example” program continues to improve each year.  Since the program was created in 2012, we have matched more than 90 students with local businesses for the opportunity to explore an area of interest to them,” said Legislator Spencer.  “The success of the program speaks to the drive of our young people and the good will of our local businesses that are opening their doors and providing this exceptional community service.”

In addition to their internship, all students personally interview with staff in Legislator Spencer’s office as well as their business placement.  The students also participate in a personal growth workshop that includes information on the importance of internships, interview skills, professionalism, phone etiquette, and responsible social media usage.  The application process and informative workshops coupled with field experience, gives these young people inside perspective into what it takes to reach their goals, and a competitive advantage at school and in future work endeavors.  Beyond a resume builder, the professional exposure gained through this program distinguishes these students from the rest.

This summer, internships will run from July 11th through August 19th.  17 motivated and unique high school and college aged students have been selected to work with businesses and not-for profits across the Huntington area.  Matches were made in a wide variety of fields, including: physical therapy, journalism, biology and ecology, veterinary science, business management, entrepreneurship, wealth management, history, and the arts.
