Written by Chris Boyle  |  17. July 2024

On Thursday, July 11th, Legislator Stephanie Bontempi (R - 18th L.D.) sponsored an “Emergency Preparedness” presentation with the Suffolk County Office of Emergency Management at Paumanack Village in Greenlawn. The presentation was focused on outlining the potential threats that residents might face, including hurricanes, Nor’easters, inland and coastal flooding, severe thunderstorms, heat waves, wildfires, tornadoes, air disasters, hazardous materials incidents, terrorism, and public health and mass casualty events.

The presentation covered important aspects of emergency preparedness, emphasizing the significance of being aware of weather conditions. Residents learned about preparing for hazardous situations, how to respond during different types of emergencies, and an introduction to the Smart911 service, which enables residents to create a safety profile that can be accessed by emergency responders. They were also informed about the role of the Office of Emergency Management in responding to emergencies, including monitoring conditions for potential threats, declaring states of emergency, providing shelters for residents and pets, storing essential resources for emergencies, and offering community recovery assistance to residents after a disaster.

Legislator Bontempi stated, “Ensuring our seniors are well-prepared for emergencies is a top priority. This presentation is a vital step in preparing them with the knowledge and resources they need to stay safe in case of an emergency.”
