SCPD: Man Arrested for Attempted Murder Following Assault at Yaphank Veterans Home
Yaphank, NY - July 17, 2017 - Suffolk County Police today arrested a man for attempting to kill a man he was sharing a room with at the Suffolk County United Veterans in Yaphank, New York on Monday, July 17, 2017 at approximately 2:25 a.m.
Michael Hunter had a dispute with a man at Suffolk County United Veterans, a homeless shelter for veterans, located at 32 Mill Road, last week. While the man was sleeping, Hunter hit him multiple times in the head with bolt cutters at approximately 2:25 a.m. The victim, 58, who is not a veteran but was staying at the home, was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue in critical condition. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Sixth Squad detectives charged Hunter, 29, a veteran who lived at the home, with Attempted Murder. He will be held overnight at the Sixth Precinct for arraignment tomorrow at First District Court in Central Islip.
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
