Special Weather Statement issued December 21 at 10:02AM EST by NWS Upton NY Areas of 2 to 5 inches of snow have been reported across northeast New Jersey, NYC, Western Long Island, the Lower Hudson Valley, and parts of western Connecticut. Wind gusts may peak around 30-35 mph this afternoon and may persist into the early evening before weakening early tonight. Conditions during this time are expected to lead to blowing snow already on the ground. This can lead to quickly reduced visibilities on roadways. Any untreated surfaces may remain snow- covered and icy into this evening, leading to hazardous driving conditions. Leave plenty of space between you and other drivers and drive at reduced speeds.

Officials: 12-Year-Old Killed in Boating Accident at Centerport Yacht Club

A boy was receiving sailing instructions when he fell into the water and became entangled in the propeller of an inflatable boat, cops say.

SCPD are investigating a boating accident that killed a 12-year-old boy in Centerport on Tuesday, July 18.

Centerport, NY - July 19, 2017 - Second Precinct detectives are investigating a boating accident that killed a 12-year-old boy in Centerport, New York on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at approximately 2:55 p.m.
 
Three children, all wearing life vests, were taking part in a sailing lesson when their boat was capsized as a controlled part of the lesson, at the Centerport Yacht Club, located at 33 Beach Plum Drive at approximately 2:55 p.m.
 
A 12-year-old boy was receiving sailing instructions when he fell into the water. An 18-year old instructor who was operating a small Zodiac inflatable boat was able to pull the child from the water and onto the Zodiac. The child was seated on the side of the Zodiac when the instructor started to move forward. The boy again fell into the water and became entangled in the propeller of the Zodiac.  The instructor immediately entered the water to render aid.  
 
He and another instructor were able to pull the child onto another boat and began CPR. On shore other EMT’s assisted until a paramedic from the Centerport Fire Department responded. The child was transported to Huntington Hospital where he died from his injuries. A instructor was also admitted to Huntington Hospital for shock. The other children did not receive medical aid.
 
The Second Squad is continuing the investigation.
