Big Lots Closing Dozens of Stores - Including Two Long Island Locations - As Future of Retailer in Doubt
Big Lots is getting ready to shutter dozens of its locations, including two on Long Island, as the future of the discount retail chain remains in doubt amid serious financial issues.
The two Long Island locations that will be closing are the ones at 260 Voice Road in Carle Place and 231 Centereach Mall in Centereach.
Big Lots announced last month during its quarterly report that, due to a 10 percent decline in net sales, it will be closing approximately 40 stores across the country by the end of 2024. The company currently operates over 1,400 stores nationwide.
The issues encountered by the chain include increased competition that brick-and-mortar retail is feeling from online sellers, as well as the likelihood of the retailer defaulting on a 2022 loan that - if it occurs - could ultimately result in Big Lots' demise.
