The Islanders’s new home has an official name: UBS Arena. This, according to a report on NHL.com on Wednesday.
Last year, officials and fans gathered in Belmont Park to kick off a ground-breaking event that is bringing the Islanders hockey team back to Long Island for good. The $1.3B arena will hold 19,000 people and include retail shops, restaurants and a hotel.
According to the NHL, the Islanders had played in Nassau Coliseum since the team’s inception in 1972. The team left Nassau for the Barclays Center in 2015 and went back to the coliseum in 2018 and split their season last year between the two venues.
The bid to build an arena at Belmont Park was selected by New York State on Dec. 20, 2017.
Construction on the Belmont Park arena was temporarily halted in March sure to the coronavirus, but restarted in late May.
