Suffolk County Correction Officer I, Deputy Sheriff I Test Registration Open

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office has announced the next Correction Officer I Test and Deputy Sheriff I Test.  The Correction Officer exam will be given on October 19, 2024 (registration closes 9/11) and the Deputy Sheriff Exam will be given on November 23, 2024 (registration closes 10/09). About the Correction Officer Exam:

Suffolk County Correction Officers staff the two Suffolk County Correctional Facilities in Riverhead and Yaphank. Correction Officers also have opportunities in the K9 Unit, Internal Security Unit, Emergency Services Unit, Community Relations Unit, and more.

To qualify to be a Suffolk County Correction Officer, you must be a US Citizen, be 21 years of age (20 years and 6 months old by the date of the written test), have a high school diploma (or equivalency diploma), pass a medical exam, psychological exam, and background investigation, and pass the Cooper Standards physical fitness test. There is no top age restriction on being hired.

The starting salary is $49,655 with step increases every six months. After 12 years, the salary is $124,235. Correction Officers enjoy a competitive benefit package that includes health, vision, and dental packages, life insurance, issued uniforms and equipment, tuition reimbursement, and a New York State pension. Correction Officers retire after 25 years, regardless of age.

About the Deputy Sheriff Exam:

Deputy Sheriffs make arrests, transport justice-involved individuals, serve legal processes, patrol highways, and secure court detention facilities. Careers can take many tracks, including opportunities in intelligence, K9, domestic violence,  federal and state task forces, civil enforcement, and district court.

To qualify to be a Suffolk County Correction Officer, you must be a US Citizen, be at least 20 years of age (19 years and 6 months old by the date of the written test), have a high school diploma (or equivalency diploma), pass a medical exam, psychological exam, and background investigation, and pass the Cooper Standards physical fitness test.

Deputy Sheriffs can retire after 20 years, regardless of age.
