Today, Rep. Nick LaLota (R-Suffolk County) released the following statement after securing $1.25 Million in federal funding for the Village of Sag Harbor. The funding will go toward the Sag Harbor Sewer Service Area Expansion project.

“As a lifelong Long Islander, I’m proud to have secured $1.25 Million in federal funding for the Village of Sag Harbor. This funding will go toward much-needed repairs and expansion of their sewer service area to help protect water quality in Sag Harbor,” said LaLota. “Ensuring access to clean water and improving our local infrastructure must be a top priority and I’m proud to be able to continue to deliver for Suffolk County families. I appreciate Mayor Gardella’s partnership to get this done and deliver for our mutual constituents and look forward to continuing to work together.”

“The Village of Sag Harbor is grateful to Representative LaLota for being a part of a Congressional team along with Senators Schumer and Gillibrand to secure funding for clean water, an issue that is very critical for all residents of our Village, County, and State,” said Thomas C. Gardella, Mayor of the Village of Sag Harbor.

Background:

Funding for this project will allow for the expansion of the Sag Harbor Sewer Service Area. This area is currently connected to the Peconic Estuary. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has classified the Estuary as a priority waterbody and has established a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) for nitrogen as part of an ongoing effort to protect water quality and improve the health of aquatic communities, fishing, and shellfishing industries, public health, and water-dependent industries such as recreation and tourism. When the proposed sewer service area expansion is complete, an estimated 84 parcels will be connected to the WWTF; nitrogen loading to area surface waters will be reduced by an estimated 4,855 pounds annually. The Village has also received grant awards from both the Town of Southampton and the Town of East Hampton for this project.

Previously, LaLota secured $1 Million for the Huntington Sewer District.
