FreedomFit to Raise Awareness of Human Trafficking on Long Island

Written by EAC Network  |  03. August 2016

Holtsville, NY - August 3, 2016 - The Long Island Against Trafficking Coalition (LIAT) will host its 6th annual FreedomFit at the Holtsville Park & Ecology Center on Saturday August 13th, 2016, from 9am-12pm. EAC Network’s Safe Harbour program, which treats and advocates for victims and youth at high risk for sexual exploitation, will be present at FreedomFit to help raise awareness for human trafficking in Suffolk County. The event is being held to raise funds for the newly formed LIAT Coalition as well as to shed a light on human trafficking on Long Island.

Since Human Trafficking Intervention Courts were both opened in Nassau and Suffolk County in 2013, it has become apparent that there is a need to provide support and bring awareness to the domestic issue. In 2015, Safe Harbour helped 44 clients. This year that number has nearly doubled to 84, displaying the need for more awareness and funds to combat this growing social issue.

FreedomFit is an awareness event featuring a 5K Run/Walk and bike paths guided by the Suffolk County Bike Riders Association (options include 5, 10, 25, and 50-mile rides). Other activities include yoga, zumba, and live music throughout the day. A free breakfast from Always Bagels and Starbucks Coffee will be provided as well.

Tickets for adults are $25 prior to the event and $35 for day-of event registration. Children tickets (12 and under) are $10. Participants can select their 5K and/or bike ride times at the time of registration.

About LIAT
Long Island Against Trafficking was founded when a group of individuals were awakened to the realities of human sex trafficking while attending a lecture.  The words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter" resonated in our hearts and minds.  We were compelled to join in the fight for those sex trafficked on Long Island and abroad.  Long Island Against Trafficking was established to raise funds for those victimized and raise public awareness of this modern-day form of slavery.  We accomplish this by speaking at public and private events as well as lobbying at the local, state, and federal levels. We plan and host fundraisers to aid in financially supporting the victims.  We also partner with other human rights organizations to create a powerful collective voice.

We are a completely volunteer based organization of passionate individuals who want to see change in our communities. Please join us in our goal to abolish sex trafficking.
