Stonington, CT - August 4, 2015 - The Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to the education and welfare of all Coast Guard members and their families, announced today that in honor of the United States Coast Guard’s 225th birthday, it will fund 176 picnics and gatherings for Coast Guard members around the country. The total support for these celebrations is over $65,000.
“When the Coast Guard Foundation set out to celebrate ‘Coast Guard Day’, as it is known, we looked at how we could have the widest impact on as many Coast Guard members and families as possible,” said Anne Brengle, president, Coast Guard Foundation. “We discovered that there are a number of small Coast Guard units not attached to larger units, with limited morale funding to use for community gatherings and celebrations. In honor of the service’s 225 years of service to our nation, we are happy to fund the birthday celebrations at these smaller units, and let all Coast Guard members and their families know that they are appreciated, especially on Coast Guard Day.”
In other events around the country, the Coast Guard Foundation is presenting $5,000 to Coast Guard units in Connecticut, in conjunction with the organization’s participation in Connecticut’s Coast Guard Summer. This gift will be presented by the Foundation at a 1:30 p.m. community-wide event at New London City Pier.
Two larger units, Coast Guard Station Ocean City, Maryland and Coast Guard Station Portsmouth, Virginia will also host Coast Guard Day Celebrations through the support of the Coast Guard Foundation.
