Albany, NY - August 4, 2016 - The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) today encouraged New Yorkers to show their pride in Team U.S.A. by ordering the Olympic Spirit license plate. The custom plates, which allow fans to display their excitement for the Olympic Games and its athletes, are available to order on DMV’s website. Twenty dollars of the annual fee supports the U.S. Olympic Training Center at Lake Placid, site of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games, and home of the historic “Miracle on Ice” game between the U.S.A. men’s hockey team and the Soviet Union.
“The Olympic Games provide us with a great opportunity to come together to support Team U.S.A. and the athletes representing our country,” said DMV Executive Deputy Commissioner Terri Egan. “I encourage New Yorkers to check out the Olympic Spirit plate, and the dozens of other custom plate designs DMV has available to celebrate your interests and favorite causes.”
The initial charge for the Olympic Spirit plates (in both passenger and commercial plate series) is $48.75, plus an annual renewal fee of $20. These fees are in addition to vehicle registration renewal fees. The plate may be personalized for an additional cost. Motorists are billed for the plates every two years when they renew their registrations.
The fastest and easiest way to order the Olympic Spirit plate or other custom plates is online. Motorists must have a valid New York State registration that does not expire within 60 days, a valid email address, an up-to-date name and address on file with DMV, and a credit or debit card accepted by DMV. Customers may also order their custom plates by mail, at their local DMV office, or by calling the DMV Custom Plate Unit at (518) 402-4838.
DMV offers more than 220 different designs for a variety of custom plates. Most recently, Governor Andrew Cuomo unveiled DMV’s new Watkins Glen International license plate, available for order beginning Thursday, August 4. The plate is the newest addition to DMV’s NASCAR custom plate series and features the WGI and NASCAR logos with a checkered flag background.
