AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM TO 11 PM EDT MONDAY The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for the following counties: New York, Bronx, Kings, Queens, Richmond, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam. from 11 AM to 11 PM EDT Sunday. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of Ground Level Ozone. The Air Quality Index, or AQI, was created as an easy way to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale. The higher the AQI value, the greater the health concern. When pollution levels are elevated, the New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. A toll free air quality hotline has been established so New York residents can stay informed on the air quality situation. Man Arrested for Stabbing Death in Baywood

Suffolk County Police have arrested a Baywood man for fatally stabbing a man in Baywood last night.

Baywood, NY - August 9th, 2013 - Suffolk County Police have arrested a Baywood man for fatally stabbing a man in Baywood last night.

Third Precinct police officers were called to a home at 23 Lincoln Avenue in Baywood after a tenant reported that a man had been stabbed. When police arrived, they found Luis Gomez, a resident of the home, lying in a side yard with a stab wound to his chest. Residents of the home told police that Gomez was stabbed when he intervened during an argument between two brothers who lived at the home. Gomez, 22, was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore where he died. 

One of the brothers, Edwin Ramirez, 24, was arrested at the scene and charged with Manslaughter 1st Degree. Ramirez will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on August 10. Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are continuing the investigation.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
