88-Year-Old Driver Strikes Three Pedestrians Waiting at NICE Bus Stop

Third Squad detectives report the details of an auto accident, in which three pedestrians were struck, that occurred in N New Hyde Park on Tuesday, 08/09/16 at 5:05 P.M.

Detectives report no apparent criminality at this time. The vehicle was impounded for brake and safety inspections.

N. New Hyde Park, NY - August 10, 2016 - Third Squad detectives report the details of an auto accident, in which three pedestrians were struck, that occurred in N New Hyde Park on Tuesday, 08/09/16 at 5:05 P.M.

According to detectives, a female driver, 88, operating a 2009 Toyota Corolla, was travelling eastbound on Union Tpke., when she experienced a mechanical issue with her tire which caused her to leave the roadway and strike three pedestrians waiting at a NICE bus stop in front of 1400 Union Tpke.  The steel and glass bus stop shelter was heavily damaged and knocked over.

Nassau County Police ambulance, North Shore LIJ ambulance and Manhasset Lakeville Fire Department ambulance transported the driver, who complained of chest pain, and the three pedestrians to area hospitals.  Pedestrian #1 a 20-year-old female, sustained a fracture femur and shattered pelvis.  Pedestrian #2 a male, 43, sustained a laceration to the head.  Pedestrian #3, a female, 63, complained of pain. 

Detectives report no apparent criminality at this time.  The vehicle was impounded for brake and safety inspections.
