SCPD: Boat Crashes into Deck of West Fire Island Home; One Dead, One Injured
Suffolk County Police officials report that one person is dead and another injured after a boat collided with a home on West Fire Island this morning at approximately 7:35 a.m.
Responding SCPD officers and members of the Islip Fire Department discovered the boat lying on it's side on land after it had crashed into the home's outdoor deck.
The tide near the home was so low that containing emergency personnel were unable to approach the scene, police say; instead, rescuers had to approach by foot.
One male was discovered deceased and a second male injured, officials say; two dogs that were on the boat were not hurt. The injured male was transported to South Shore University Hospital for treatment and the dogs were turned over to a family member.
No injuries were reported to first responders or any inhabitants of the island.
UPDATE: Phillip Sanzano, 47, of Bellport, has been identified as the man who was killed in a boat crash on West Fire Island in the Great South Bay on August 10.
