AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT TO MIDNIGHT EDT THURSDAY NIGHT The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for the following counties: New York, Bronx, Kings, Queens, Richmond, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam. from midnight tonight to midnight EDT Thursday night. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of Fine Particulates. The Air Quality Index, or AQI, was created as an easy way to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale. The higher the AQI value, the greater the health concern. When pollution levels are elevated, the New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. A toll free air quality hotline has been established so New York residents can stay informed on the air quality situation. Glen Cove, NY - August 12th, 2013 - Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today announced the 28th Annual International Coastal Cleanup, sponsored by the American Littoral Society and the Friends of Garvies Point Museum and Preserve, will take place on Saturday, September 14th from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Volunteers of all ages will meet at Garvies Point Museum and Preserve located at 50 Barry Drive, Glen Cove, NY to clean up Garvies shoreline as participants in the International Coastal Cleanup sponsored by the American Littoral Society and the Friends of Garvies Point Museum and Preserve.

“I encourage all residents to stop by Garvies Point and participate in the 28th Annual International Coastal Cleanup,” said County Executive Mangano. “Any amount of time you can give to such a great cause will help keep Nassau County a beautiful place to live, work and raise a family.”

The International Coastal Cleanup is more than just a “beach cleanup.” The debris will be itemized and recorded on data sheets for the American Littoral Society which coordinates the Coastal Cleanup in New York State. The American Littoral Society will send the information to the Ocean Conservancy for analysis so that scientists all over the world can help develop effective national and international pollution control policies. According to the American Littoral Society, in 2011 6,368 volunteers, coordinated by the American Littoral Society, cleaned and documented 93,644 pounds of debris along 262.18 miles of New York State's shoreline.

Volunteers should wear old clothes, work shoes or boots (no sandals) and bring work gloves if you have them. Drinks will be provided. Afterwards, everyone is invited to a very special LIVE animal program sponsored by North Shore Audubon & Tackapausha Museum and Preserve. Also enjoy juice and cookies sponsored by the Friends of Garvies Point Museum and Preserve.
