Robert Sutton, a volunteer firefighter from Central Islip, NY, has been elected to the board of trustees of the Firefighters Home, a skilled-nursing home available to all New York volunteer firefighters through the Firefighters Association of the State of New York (FASNY). The announcement was made at the association’s 151st annual convention in Niagara Falls which began on August 10. The Firefighters Home traces its roots back to 1892 and currently has nearly 90 residents.
Sutton’s term as firefighter’s home trustee will run for five years.
“It is a privilege and an honor to have been chosen to serve as one of the Trustees for the FASNY Firefighter’s Home, and I am proud to be representing Suffolk County and all of the residents of the Firefighter’s Home.”
Sutton, a 31-year-veteran to the fire service, is a retired Captain for the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) and currently serves as the Commissioner for the Central Islip Fire Department. He has an active and long history in the volunteer fire service including serving for 25 years as his Department’s Secretary; currently serving as the Fire Prevention & Life Safety Officer for the Central Islip Fire Department; and is also a Past President of the Suffolk County Fire Safety Educators. Currently Sutton is serving as president of the Suffolk County Volunteer Firefighters Association and is a Board Member and Caregiver for the Firefighter Cancer Support Network, New York Chapter.
Sutton was named the Fire Educator of the Year by FASNY in 2018 and was the 2015 recipient of the Central Islip Civic Council’s Good Neighbor Award.
