NCPD: Intoxicated Teen Causes Fatal Accident in New Hyde Park

A New Hyde Park teenage is accused of having caused a fatal accident while intoxicated.

New Hyde Park, NY - August 20, 2014 - Homicide Squad detectives report the details of a Fatal Vehicular Auto Accident that occurred on August 19, 2014 at 11:28 pm in New Hyde Park.
 
According to detectives, while traveling southbound on Covert Avenue in a 2012 Ford Fusion approaching the Long Island Railroad, the victim, a 55 year old male, along with his 38 year old wife and 6 year old daughter, were struck by a 2003 Toyota Camry that was westbound on Second Avenue at the intersection of Covert Avenue. The vehicle was being operated by Deepak Kumar, 17, of 1410 South Park Place, New Hyde Park and accompanied by 4 other passengers. As a result of the collision, the driver, who is not being identified at this time, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. His wife, who was found unconscious and their daughter, who suffered a fractured leg, were transported to an area hospital for treatment.  
 
Kumar, who was found to be in an intoxicated condition, was placed under arrest at the scene without incident and was transported to an area hospital for observation. No other injuries were reported and both vehicles were impounded for brake and safety checks.
 
Kumar is charged with Vehicular Manslaughter 2nd Degree and Driving While Ability Impaired Drugs. He will be arraigned in First District Court, Hempstead on 08/20/2014.
