Long Islander Lori King might become the first person to officially make the 24-mile swim from Block Island, RI to Montauk, NY. According to a New York Times article King made the journey in 8 hours 39 minutes 45 seconds.
“Once her swim is certified, King will be recognized as the first person to complete the journey,” the article said.
The 47-year-old encountered sharks, strong currents and cramps in her legs during her swim but she made it with the help of scouts from nearby boats who alerted her to danger, including the shark and jellyfish.
27East also reported on the story, posting on Facebook:
“On August 3, Lori King completed a more than 20-mile solo swim from Block Island to Montauk.”
She was accompanied by her observers in motor boats, a kayak and a paddleboarder.
“If her trek is certified, as expected, by the Marathon Swimmers Federation, a process that could take several months, she would be acknowledged as the first person to swim from Block Island to Montauk,” The New York Times reported.
