AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 PM EDT THIS EVENING The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for the following areas: All five boroughs of New York City, and Westchester, Rockland, Nassau, and Suffolk counties. Until 11 PM EDT this evening. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of Ground Level Ozone. The New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. A toll free air quality hotline has been established so New York residents can stay informed on the air quality situation. Motorcyclist Seriously Injured in Crash with Police Officer

Suffolk County Police Second Squad detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash involving a police vehicle that seriously injured a motorcyclist in Dix Hills today.

The operator of the motorcycle was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital Suffolk County Police helicopter with a serious head injury.

Dix Hills, NY - August 24, 2016 - Suffolk County Police Second Squad detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash involving a police vehicle that seriously injured a motorcyclist in Dix Hills today.

A marked Suffolk County Police Motor Carrier Safety vehicle was struck in the rear by a motorcycle, on the westbound Long Island Expressway, approximately 500 feet east of Exit 51, at approximately 1:25 p.m. The operator of the police vehicle was attempting to make a U-turn at an area designated for emergency vehicles.

The operator of the motorcycle was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital Suffolk County Police helicopter with a serious head injury. The officer was transported to Huntington Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The victim’s names are being withheld until notification of family members.
