Intergenerational experiences are one of the joys witnessed at Long Island Children’s Museum on a daily basis.  With a 31-year history, the Museum is increasingly welcoming adults who came to the Museum with their children and now are recreating those memories with grandchildren.  LICM has several special events planned for Grandparents Day 2024 (September 8).

“LICM is a space where grandparents and grandchildren can bond, learn and have fun together year-round,” said Museum President Erika Floreska. “We’re delighted to celebrate this special relationship and offer a special opportunity for families to spend quality time together and explore the joys of learning in a playful environment.”

Grandparents Day typically falls during the Museum’s annual Fall Fix Up period, when children’s museums across the country close to the public to handle exhibit and facility maintenance following their busy summer seasons.  This year, Grandparents Day falls on the final day of LICM’s summer season, allowing the Museum to welcome guests to celebrate these special people in their lives.

Visitors are invited to create a gift for their grandparents during a special afternoon drop-in program.  Between 1 and 3 p.m., children can decorate a tea towel to give as a special gift to celebrate their special connection with these important people in their family.

For families looking to extend their fun, the Museum’s “Grandparent Membership” will be available at 15% off its annual rate.  Membership provides unlimited access to all exhibits and events throughout the year, exclusive Member Only Hours, discounts at the Museum Store and theater performances, plus tickets to Nunley’s Carousel.  Visitors can purchase a specially-priced Grandparent membership at the Museum on September 8.

Among the new exhibits coming up for Grandparent members to enjoy are Block Party with Imagination Playground (September 28-November 3, 2024), Snowflake Sock Skating (November 16, 2024 - January 5, 2025), Moon to Mars (January 18 – May 4, 2025) and Dinosaurs: Fossils Exposed (May 17 – August 31, 2025).  Grandparent members will also enjoy discounts on tickets for 2024-25 LICM Theater productions: The Snowy Day and Other Stories by Ezra Jack Keats (December 2024), Interstellar Cinderella (February-March 2025) and Elephant and Piggie’s We are in a Play! (April-June 2025).

All activities will be held at the Long Island Children’s Museum, 11 Davis Avenue, Garden City, NY. For the safety of our visitors, Adults are not permitted in the Museum without children; Museum visitors under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

About the Long Island Children’s Museum (www.licm.org)

The mission of Long Island Children’s Museum (LICM) is to connect all our communities’ children, and those who care for them, to a life of wonder, imagination and exploration. At LICM, children discover their passions and their relationship to the world we share. The 40,000-square-foot museum serves over 300,000 children and adults annually. The private, not-for-profit institution chartered by the New York State Board of Regents, offers museum-based educational programs and cultural experiences, as well as an extensive community outreach program offered in schools, libraries and youth centers across Long Island. Additionally, the Children’s Museum operates the historic Nunley’s Carousel in association with Nassau County, one of three intact Stein & Goldstein carousels still in existence.

Recognized with several honors, including the National Medal from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), LICM is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), the gold standard of museum excellence. It is currently the only accredited children’s museum in New York State and is one of only 16 accredited children’s museums nationwide. LICM has earned 4-stars on Charity Navigator and has Platinum Transparency on Candid.
