During the Prohibition era, when the sale of alcohol was outlawed, speakeasies became the establishments where people would gather to buy and drink the illegal beverages. Here are a few Long Island bars that are recreating the speakeasy experience with fun twists. If you’re looking for something a little bit different for your next night out, here are some places you may want to check out. (Be sure you get the passcode to Charlotte’s!)

Charlotte’s Speakeasy

294 Main Street, Farmingdale

Past the frozen yogurt handles of Charlotte’s Desserts, an ice cream and frozen yogurt shop in downtown Farmingdale, is the entrance to Charlotte’s Speakeasy, an actual restored speakeasy from Prohibition times.

It offers a 1920s lounge vibe, an outdoor patio along with jazz music and signature cocktails with names like “The Obituary,” “Bootlegger’s Old Fashioned” and “Corpse Reviver #2.” Complementing the drinks is a menu of artisanal pizzas, wings, frozen desserts, hot drinks and other fare. To get in the secret book case door, you’ll need to give the bouncer the weekly password which is available on the Charlotte's Speakeasy website.

Enter what looks like someone’s private Victorian-style home surrounded by a white picket fence and you’ll find an intimate cocktail bar that serves creative drinks, classic favorites and refined bar food in a hip atmosphere. From Moscow mules, daiquiris and cucumber cosmos to unique cocktails like “Zero Flux Given” made with cold brew, coconut cream and ruby port and the “Breakfast Old Fashioned” a boozy blend of bourbon, house brandied cherry and maple, there’s a large selection for every taste.
