A horrific scene played out on Friday afternoon on a New York City subway platform as a seemingly deranged man attacked an elderly woman by beating her repeatedly with her own cane while onlookers made no attempt to intervene, but instead filmed the encounter and later posted the video on X (formerly Twitter)

The victim, a 60-year-old woman, was struck over 50 times during a span of two minutes at approximately 3:30 a.m. Friday by an unidentified man while she was walking at the West 116 Street and Lenox Avenue station, according to police.

The disturbing video depicts the suspect initially lunging at the woman while wielding an umbrella as she attempts to defend herself with her cane; however, the male is able to wrest the cane from her, and from there he begins repeatedly striking her with it, causing her to fall to the ground while screaming for help.

The woman is seen being struck over 50 times on her head, legs, arms, stomach, and back; she is hit with such force that eventually the cane breaks. At this point the woman snatches the remainder of her cane away from her assailant, who then resorts to punching her in the head while yelling at her.

Before the video ends – during which no one, including the individuals filming it, attempt to assist or intervene to end the assault – the male can be seen kicking the elderly victim while she lies motionless on the ground.

Members of the New York City Police Department responded to a 911 call regarding the incident at approximately 3:30 a.m. The victim was taken to a local area hospital, where she is currently in stable condition.

Reports indicate that the woman did not know her assailant; it is also not known what events led up to the attack as of press time.

Police are currently conducting a search for the unidentified suspect.
