Shoreham, NY – September 6, 2013 – After constituents voiced concerns about the potential sale of parcels located near their homes, County Legislator Sarah Anker took action to preserve the parcels.

Anker contacted the Suffolk County Water Authority, who has recently proposed to sell the land, and asked that the Authority to delay any potential award until Anker can explore opportunities for acquisition.  The parcels, located in or near the Compatible Growth Area of the Central Pine Barrens, include 10 and 12 Briarcliff Road and 19 Upper Crossway, Shoreham; and 10 Pauls Path, Coram.

“Thanks to the concern of local residents, I have taken action to delay the sale of these properties,” said Anker. “I am working with Sarah Lansdale, Suffolk County’s Director of Planning and Environment, to preserve the parcels. I believe that these parcels provide green space as well as an extensive wildlife habitat. Both properties are located in or near the Compatible Growth Area of the Central Pine Barrens and it’s vital that we act quickly to protect our open space while it’s still available. ”

The Suffolk County Water Authority received a letter from Legislator Anker requesting that our board postpone any award of the bid until she has had the opportunity to investigate the feasibility of the acquisitions,” said Jeffrey W. Szabo, CEO of SWCA.  “I have recommended to my board members that they delay their decision until the County has made a determination.”

Throughout her years as a County Legislator, Anker has been working extensively with the community and local civic organizations to ensure that the county continues to protect our groundwater and preserve open space throughout Suffolk County. As a result of Anker’s legislative action, the county has preserved 1,817 acres of land for a value of $116,733,832.
