Suffolk County, NY - September 7th, 2013 - Community Mental Hygiene Services, in cooperation with the Prevention Resource Center, recently aired the 200th episode of Something of Substance, a video magazine focused on issues surrounding substance abuse and mental illness.
In celebration of this achievement, Cablevision will air throughout September a retrospective that highlights many of the show’s finer moments. Aside from showcasing the array of innovative services provided by Suffolk County agencies, the show has featured segments on the powerful examples set by celebrities such as singer Judy Collins, actress Patty Duke, and football player Herschel Walker.
“Suffolk County is proud to host Something of Substance,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “Over the course of more than two decades, the show has informed the public about ways that they can help keep our neighborhoods healthy and safe, while also learning how to access treatment should it be needed. It is worthwhile viewing for all in our community.”
Commissioner of Health Services James Tomarken said, “The residents of Suffolk County are very fortunate to have this resource available to them right in their own homes through cable television. Many residents, whose lives are touched by substance abuse or mental illness, whether it is themselves or a loved one, may not know where to turn for help. Here, with a click of a remote, they can tune in and see inspiring examples of recovery and learn about resources in their community.”
Art Flescher, Director of Community Mental Hygiene Services and host of Something of Substance, believes that the show has been a valuable endeavor and a well-deserved source of pride for all involved. “As changing times presented new issues of public interest, our talented staff provided timely and accurate information. At its core the show attempts to communicate a message of hope through education and individual stories of recovery. Our staff members, past and present, are to be commended for their commitment to that mission.”
