AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 PM EDT THIS EVENING An Air Quality Health Advisory remains in effect for the following counties: Nassau and Suffolk. Until 11 PM EDT this evening. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of ground level ozone. The New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. A toll free air quality hotline has been established so New York residents can stay informed on the air quality situation. Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers rescued two swimmers in distress in the Great South Bay in Kismet this evening.

Kismet, NY - September 6, 2015 - Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers rescued two swimmers in distress in the Great South Bay in Kismet this evening.

Four people on board a 1996 21-foot Sea Ray unknowingly anchored their boat in a tidal current in the Great South Bay, ¼ mile north of the Fire Island Lighthouse at approximately 7 p.m. Robyn Ciano, her daughter  Jade-Ashley Stetler and Brian McDaniels jumped into the water to swim but were pulled away from the boat. Ciano’s mother called 911 from the boat.

Marine Bureau Police Officers Christopher DeFeo and Kevin Comiskey on patrol vessel Marine Juliet responded. The officers rescued Ciano and McDaniels. Stetler reached the boat prior to police arrival.

Ciano, 38, of Babylon, Stetler, 13, and McDaniels, 38, of Levittown, were treated by the West Islip Fire Department and refused further medical treatment.
