Community Leaders Demand USPS Action to Reopen Sound Beach Post Office

Written by Lon Cohen  |  11. September 2023

In a united front, Supervisor Ed Romaine, Deputy Supervisor Dan Panico, and Councilwoman Jane Bonner, along with the Sound Beach Civic Association and concerned residents, gathered in Sound Beach to demand swift action from the United States Postal Service (USPS) regarding the closure of the Sound Beach Post Office. The closure, which occurred earlier this summer, has left residents inconvenienced and without vital postal services in the area.

Supervisor Ed Romaine, addressing a gathered crowd, stated, "Residents have always relied on the services that the local post office provides to the local community. Closing the Sound Beach Post Office and asking people to travel out of the way to buy stamps, mail a package, or pick one up is an inconvenience to many of our elderly residents who live in Sound Beach. I ask the US Postal Service to rectify this situation now and reopen the Sound Beach Post Office as soon as possible."

Deputy Supervisor Dan Panico echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for immediate action.

"The Sound Beach Post Office has been closed for far too long,” he said. “It needs to either reopen safely or the US Government should cancel the lease with the landlord and find more suitable quarters."

Councilwoman Jane Bonner said that the closing of the post office continues to be an inconvenience for the residents of Sound Beach.

“This situation must be resolved as soon as possible with repairs and renovations or a new Post Office in a nearby location," she said.

Sound Beach Civic Association president Bea Ruberto and Chad Lennon, representing U.S. Congressman Nick LaLota (NY1), were also present at the press conference, showing their support for the community's cause.

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, who has taken a proactive stance on the issue, said he contacted Postmaster General DeJoy to get information and demand answers for Sound Beach residents regarding the months-long closure of their post office.

As the Sound Beach community unites in their demand for action, they await a response from USPS and the federal government regarding the fate of their local post office.
