In a recent broadcast that aired on August 31st, 2023, NBC's Today Show showcased the remarkable achievements of the Town of Islip Shellfish Cultivation Facility and its thriving oyster farming program. The segment, hosted by Harry Smith, offered viewers a unique glimpse into the world of aquaculture, emphasizing its vital role in preserving the oyster industry and the environment.

The Today Show team visited the Cultivation Facility in East Islip during a tour conducted in July.

The segment provided a look at the Town's aquaculture program, the substantial environmental benefits it brings, and a behind-the-scenes view of the meticulous process of nurturing larvae into various sizes of oyster and clam seed tailored to the needs of shellfish farmers. Additionally, the segment highlighted the dedication of a local Blue Point oyster farmer, offering insights into their work on the bay. The story culminated with a mouthwatering oyster tasting experience at the Salt and Barrel Restaurant in Bay Shore.

"Through our robust program, we generate millions of clams and oysters each year, leading to improved water quality and bolstering the health and sustainability of one of our most cherished environmental assets, the Great South Bay," said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

She also expressed pride in the recent expansion into Phase III, which includes an additional 1,500 acres earmarked for future licensing.

"This is a significant achievement for a town committed to rejuvenating oysters and safeguarding the environment," noted Today Show Host Harry Smith, a seasoned journalist with a history of covering aquaculture stories.

The Town of Islip Shellfish Cultivation Facility operates year-round, collaborating closely with local farmers to counter the decline in shellfish populations due to factors such as hurricanes, pollution, and overharvesting. Oysters, often referred to as "ecosystem engineers," can filter as much as 35-50 gallons of water per day per adult oyster, underscoring their crucial role in maintaining water quality.

The Town of Islip remains steadfast in its dedication to the responsible development of the aquaculture industry, with a focus on expanding the marine-based economy and enhancing shellfish production while simultaneously improving water quality in the Great South Bay. As part of their commitment to community engagement, the Shellfish Cultivation Facility offers free tours to the public and local schools.
