Discount Retail Chain Big Lots Files for Bankruptcy, Multiple Stores - Including 10 in NY - Slated to Close

After officially declaring bankruptcy on Monday, Big Lots is getting ready to shutter dozens of its locations - including ten in New York, with two of those being om Long Island - as the future of the discount retail chain remains in doubt amid serious financial issues.
 
The two Long Island locations that will be closing are the ones at 260 Voice Road in Carle Place and 231 Centereach Mall in Centereach.
 
Big Lots previously announced in June 2024 during its quarterly report that, due to a 10 percent decline in net sales, it will be closing approximately 40 stores across the country by the end of 2024. The company currently operates over 1,400 stores nationwide.
 
The full list of stores in New York that will be closed are:
 
  • Delaware Avenue, Buffalo
  • South Ogden Street, Buffalo
  • Route 5 & 20, Canandaigua
  • Voice Road, Carle Place
  • Centereach Mall, Centereach
  • North Triphammer Road, Ithaca
  • Commercial Drive, New Hartford
  • Cornelia Street, Plattsburgh
  • Burnett Boulevard, Poughkeepsie
  • Upper Glen Street, Queensbury
 
Upon the bankruptcy announcement on Monday, the retailer revealed that they will be selling its assets to an affiliate of a private equity firm called Nexus Capital Management, and that they have also secured $707.5 million in financing in order to hopefully help get the company back on its feet.
