Hempstead, NY - September 10, 2014 - Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano, in partnership with the Mental Health Association, today announced a free Lifesaving Narcan Training Seminar for residents that will take place in Hempstead on Tuesday, September 23rd. Residents will be trained on how to administer a lifesaving antidote which can reverse the fatal effects of an Opioid overdose.
The training seminar is provided by the Nassau County Department of Human Services and the Office of Mental Health, Chemical Dependency & Developmental Disabilities Services’ (OMHCDDDS)Behavioral Health Awareness Campaign. The training entitled, Get the Scoop: Skills and Knowledge on Overdose Prevention, teaches residents all they need to know about the overdose reversal antidote agent known as Narcan.
The OMHCDDDS was state-certified in September 2012 to provide Overdose Responder programs and has trained more than 2,000 citizens throughout the County, including family members of those addicted to drugs. Narcan is provided free to the program, by the New York State Health Department. Narcan, administered through a nasal spray, is provided at no charge to those over the age of 18 who complete the 90-minute training seminar.
County Executive Mangano stated, “My administration is dedicated to saving the lives of young people through education, awareness and enforcement initiatives, including these free Lifesaving Narcan Training Seminars.”
