In August, Long Island Cares estimated that more than 74,000 Long Islanders had visited Long Island Cares-The Harry Chapin Food Bank or another local emergency food pantry for the very first time during the COVID-19 pandemic. In response, Long Island Cares established 19 temporary “pop up” locations to help meet the increased need.
At one facility in Hauppauge recently, Brookhaven Town officials took the time to roll up their sleeves and put together 215 bags of food totaling 4,730 pounds. According to a statement released by the township, this equates to 3,936 meals which will be distributed via mobile units to Long Islanders in need.
