Authorities are investigating an incident that took place Tuesday, September 12, where an unidentified driver appeared to stalk and harass two Riverhead High School students while they were walking back to class after leaving the campus for lunch.
Reports indicate that the male driver of a silver Dodge Ram pickup truck began following the two students - whose names and genders have not been revealed - and eventually pulled up to them, engaged them in conversation, and asked for information regarding their social media profiles.
The students refused to interact with the individual and continued walking back to the high school, according to a statement issued by Riverhead Superintendent of Schools Augustine Tornatore.
“The students ignored the driver and walked onto the school grounds and into the building. The students reported the incident to building administration and district security," he said, noting that Riverhead Town Police were then contacted about the incident.
“We want to make sure families are aware of this vehicle traveling in town,” Tornatore added. “We also want to encourage parents and guardians to speak with their children about the importance of always traveling in groups when walking in town or anywhere on off-campus grounds.”
No injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Riverhead Police headquarters at 631-747-4500.
