It’s spooky season and the scarecrow competitions are heating up - but not too much because we all know what happens with scarecrows and fire! Below we present some of the scarecrow competitions and shows on Long Island in 2023.
Scarecrow Contest at The Shoppes - Join The Shoppes fall celebration by crafting your own scarecrow for The Shoppes. It’s FREE to ENTER with your favorite scarecrow idea. Prizes for First, Second and Third place. Entries must be SUBMITTED by WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2023. Families, Artists, Scout troops, teams and friends are all invited to enter. or call (631) 846-2372. Public voting will take place at The Shoppes and at the Fall Festival and through October 26th.
WMHO 33rd Annual Scarecrow Competition - This October, scarecrows will once again line the walkways throughout Stony Brook Village in the Ward Melville Heritage Organization’s 33rd Annual Scarecrow Competition! Register as an individual, group or professional and create a scarecrow masterpiece. First place winners will receive a cash prize. Registration and entry fee of $30 due by Wednesday, September 20th. Vote for your favorite scarecrows between September 30th and October 25th. Ballots can be found in all shops and eateries in Stony Brook Village and must be returned to shops no later than October 25th to be counted. Winners will be notified on Tuesday, October 27th by 5pm and will be announced during the Ward Melville Heritage Organization’s Halloween Festival on October 31st.
Family Fun Day 2023 - Celebrate Local Community, Local Business, and Good Ol' Family fun! Bring a freshly baked Apple Pie for our Apple Pie baking contest and a homemade Scarecrow for the Scarecrow contest (prizes will be awarded).
2023 Annual Children’s Scarecrow Contest - The annual Village of Bellport Scarecrow Contest is a much-loved tradition for the Village and the surrounding area. The Scarecrows will adorn the Village Business District from Columbus Day Weekend through Halloween. The Village will provide the sticks for the body and the pumpkin for the head. Contestants will make the Scarecrows at home but this year the Village of Bellport Department of Public Works will place and affix all the Scarecrows.
Annual Scarecrow Festival at Bayview Florist - At this free-to-enter-event, guests are asked to bring their old clothes and accessories and create their very own scarecrow friends. In addition to scarecrow making, beautiful fall weather, and photo opportunities, the festival will feature the best DJ, a food truck, in-store specials, raffles with awesome prizes, and an old-school bake sale. Oakdale Historical Society’s March of the Scarecrows - The Society will be awarding CASH prizes for first, second and third places (as determined by community voting). Not only does this family-friendly event decorate the churchyard in celebration of Fall, but it also provides a fun thing to do as a family, business, scout troop/club or individual residents. Set-up day for the scarecrows is Saturday, October 28th at St. John's Church from 10 am to noon. Community voting will occur Sunday, October 29th from 10am to 2:00 pm. Last year St. John's Church sponsored a Halloween Costume Parade during the voting period and plans are in the works to do the same this year! Stay tuned for further details. Scarecrow Workshop at Brenner’s Farm - Learn about these garden guardians by bringing used clothing and decorating one of your own. They will all help make a scarecrow for the farm. Children will leave with a child-sized scarecrow of their own. Please bring clothing size (small 4-6 to Medium 6-8) to the workshop with a parent. Located at 56 Gnarled Hollow Rd, Setauket.
