Sid Jacobson JCC's artSPACE Launches First Exhibition of 2024-25 Season

Written by Chris Boyle  |  18. September 2024

Sid Jacobson JCC is proud to unveil Getting There, a thought-provoking art exhibition by celebrated painter Dee Shapiro.

The exhibition, which is featured within the space of SJJCC’s 90-foot art gallery, runs from September through November, highlighting Shapiro’s unique exploration of urban landscapes and geometric abstraction.

Renowned for her intricate patterns and cityscape renderings, Dee has spent decades captivating audiences with her artistic range. Getting There brings together two distinct elements of her work—her early large-scale bicycle paintings from the 1980s and her small renderings of cities and landscapes, which reflect a period of artistic growth from 2000 to 2010.

“I am so pleased to be showcasing my early large bicycle paintings flanking my smaller cityscapes in this exhibition,” said Shapiro. “It’s about getting from there to here, and it’s an honor to present my journey at Sid Jacobson JCC.”

Shapiro’s work is steeped in geometry and structural abstraction. Her bicycle paintings, notable for their vivid architectural forms and basic geometric shapes, stand in contrast yet complement the more intimate renderings of cities in her later works. The combination of these themes invites viewers to explore how we experience urban life through movement, whether by foot, car, or bicycle.

Shapiro’s work has been exhibited widely at prestigious institutions such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, and the Heckscher Museum of Art. Her art, featured in both corporate and private collections, continues to inspire viewers with its dynamic patterns and meticulous attention to form.

“We are thrilled to kick off the 2024-25 season with Dee Shapiro’s 'Getting There.' Her innovative approach to urban and geometric themes perfectly embodies the spirit of exploration and creativity that artSPACE strives to celebrate,” said Jaime Teich, SJJCC Associate Executive Director, Marketing + Communications. “This exhibition offers a unique opportunity for our community to engage with the evolution of Shapiro’s work and experience her artistic journey.”

Sid Jacobson JCC’s artSPACE serves as a platform for diverse and inclusive exhibitions, inviting artists to share their works with the community in a space that celebrates creativity and connection.

Getting There is open to the public during regular JCC hours. For more information about this exhibition, visit SJJCC.org/artspace.
