The Long Island Chapter of The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP LI), a leading suicide research and prevention organization in the US, will host its annual Long Island Out of the Darkness Community Walk on Sunday, October 27th at Jones Beach, Field 5, in Wantagh, NY.
The walk will raise funds to support suicide awareness and prevention on Long Island. The Community Walks, held in hundreds of communities across the country, are the core of the Out of the Darkness movement, which began in 2004. The Jones Beach Walk is one of the top 5 fundraising walks in the country for AFSP, with over 4,000 participants. Past walks have raised in excess of $500,000.
These events give people the courage to open up about their own connections to the cause, and a platform to create a culture that’s smart about mental health. Friends, family members, neighbors and coworkers walk side-by-side, supporting each other and in memory of those lost.
The walk takes place along the boardwalk and is approximately 3 miles long. Walkers can shorten their routes as needed and is wheelchair and stroller accessible. There is no fee to register for the walk and no minimum fundraising requirement, but if you raise $150, you will receive an official walk t-shirt.
Free parking is at Jones Beach Field #5. Pets are not allowed at NY State Parks.
