Farmingville, NY - In a decisive move to address neighborhood safety concerns, the Town of Brookhaven took action on September 27 by demolishing a burned-out "zombie house" located at 510 Scherger Avenue in Bellport. The initiative, led by Councilman Michael Loguercio and Supervisor Ed Romaine, comes in response to numerous resident complaints and multiple Town building code violations.

The house, a persistent blight on the community, had been ravaged by fire, leaving it in a state of disrepair and disuse. Town officials acted swiftly and decisively to address the issue, employing the provisions of Chapter 73 of the Town Code, which offers a "fast track" to eliminate unsafe structures that pose risks to neighborhoods.

Under this ordinance, the responsibility for the demolition and debris removal falls upon the property owner, with the Town subsequently placing a lien on the property. This lien is then reflected on the property owner's tax bill. The County reimburses the Town for the costs incurred, and the Town, in turn, collects the funds from the property owner.

The demolition of the "zombie house" on Scherger Avenue not only removes an eyesore but also enhances the safety and aesthetics of the neighborhood. It sends a clear message that the Town of Brookhaven is committed to maintaining the integrity and appeal of its communities.

To report a "zombie house" or any other code violations within the Town of Brookhaven, concerned residents can visit the Town's official website or contact the Town hotline at 631-451-TOWN (8696). The Town's proactive approach to addressing such issues ensures that communities remain vibrant, safe, and welcoming for all residents.
