Brookhaven Councilwoman Bonner Announces NY Special Olympics 14th Annual Polar Plunge to be held Nov. 23

At a recent Town Board Meeting, Brookhaven Councilwoman Jane Bonner introduced New York Special Olympics athlete Matt Schuster and Director of Development, Alexis Dawson who talked about the 14th annual New York Special Olympics Polar Plunge at Cedar Beach and encouraged people to participate and pledge a donation. 
 
Councilwoman Bonner presented Matt and Alexis with a proclamation declaring September 28 as Special Olympics Day in the Town of Brookhaven. Matt also spoke about what it takes to compete and succeed as a Special Olympics athlete, explaining that they train for weeks and months to prepare for local, regional and statewide competition. 
 
Athletes are supported by more than 5,000 coaches and 4,300 volunteers and are never charged to participate in the programs. They rely solely on donations to pay the cost. For more information, to register or donate, go to www.specialolympics.org.
 
The 2024 Polar Plunge will be held on Saturday, November 23. Registration starts at 9:30 am and the plunge is at 11:30 am. The Town of Brookhaven’s Cedar Beach is located at 244 Harbor Beach Road in Mt. Sinai.
