Mineola, NY - October 4, 2018 - Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas announced that a Franklin Square man was sentenced today to 18 years to life in prison for the 2017 fatal stabbing of a 21-year-old man.

Camari Hurley, 24, pleaded guilty on May 11 before Judge Howard Sturim to Murder in the Second Degree (an A-I felony).

“This defendant brutally stabbed his 21-year-old victim and callously left him to die on the entrance ramp of a highway,” DA Singas said. “Thanks to quick police work and our prosecutors this suspect has been brought to justice.”

DA Singas said on January 11, 2017, at about 9:15 p.m., 21-year-old Sumeet Singh was discovered near the 15N entrance ramp to the Southern State Parkway in Valley Stream by drivers trying to get onto the highway. When New York State Police troopers and Nassau County police officers arrived at the scene, the victim was bleeding from several stab wounds to his chest and back. Officers heard Singh say that Camari Hurley had done this to him.

Following a brief investigation, the defendant was found by NCPD Bureau of Special Operations officers approximately 30 minutes later – about a mile away from the scene – at the intersection of Cypress and Magnolia Drive with his clothing covered in blood. DNA testing later confirmed the blood on the defendant’s shoes, pants and socks matched the victim’s. During the investigation, police also found a hat in the nearby woods that bore the logo of a pizza restaurant where the defendant was employed.

The victim later died at Winthrop University Hospital from his injuries which included a lung perforation and blunt force trauma to the head. A further investigation revealed the defendant and victim had a dispute earlier in the day.

Senior Assistant District Attorney Ania Pulaski is prosecuting this case. David Haber, Esq. represents the victim.
