AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM TO 11 PM EDT SUNDAY The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for the following counties: Nassau, Suffolk, from 11 AM to 11 PM EDT Sunday. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of Ground Level Ozone. The Air Quality Index, or AQI, was created as an easy way to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale. The higher the AQI value, the greater the health concern. When pollution levels are elevated, the New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. A toll free air quality hotline has been established so New York residents can stay informed on the air quality situation. FEMA, FCC to Conduct Nationwide Test of Emergency Alert System and Wireless Emergency Alerts Oct. 4

"The purpose of the Oct. 4 test is to ensure that the systems continue to be effective means of warning the public about emergencies," FEMA stated.

FEMA, in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), is slated to conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) on Wednesday, October 4.
 
The national test will consist of two portions, testing WEA and EAS capabilities. Both tests are slated to begin at approximately 2:20 p.m. ET on Wednesday. The WEA portion of the test will be directed to all consumer cell phones across the country, with the test message being displayed in either English or in Spanish, depending on the language settings of the wireless handset.
 
The EAS portion of the test will be sent to radios and televisions.
 
"The purpose of the Oct. 4 test is to ensure that the systems continue to be effective means of warning the public about emergencies, particularly those on the national level," FEMA stated.
 
To help ensure that these alerts are accessible to the entire public, including people with disabilities, the alerts will be accompanied by a unique tone and vibration.
