Preservation Long Island, LI Museum to Host Artoberfest! A Celebration of German American Artist Edward Lange

Written by Chris Boyle  |  06. October 2022

Preservation Long Island and the Long Island Museum are pleased to host Artoberfest! – a one-day Pop-Up Biergarten in celebration of German-American artist Edward Lange (1846–1912), who lived and worked on Long Island. The event will take place on October 22, 2022 from 12pm to 4pm at historic Sherwood-Jayne Farm in East Setauket, New York. With live music, food, beverages, games, arts & crafts, and an optional morning tour of the Long Island Museum’s exhibition, Land by Hand: Edward Lange’s Long Island, in nearby Stony Brook, the day’s events are suitable for all ages.

Artoberfest! at Sherwood-Jayne Farm, features a special Oktoberfest beer in collaboration with Lithology Brewing Co. All ticket purchasers age 21 and over will receive a ticket for a complimentary beverage, generously provided by Lithology! Enjoy live music by Buddy Merriam & Back Roads and food offerings by Mel’s Magickal Meals. In addition, one hour before the Artoberfest! activities begin at Sherwood-Jayne Farm, a separately ticketed, free guided tour of the current Edward Lange exhibition at the Long Island Museum in nearby Stony Brook is available to the first twenty-five registrants.

Edward Lange (1846–1912), was a German American landscape painter who worked in and around Long Island during the 1870s and 1880s. Lange sketched and painted town centers, local businesses, and private residences with precise detail.

“We are pleased to collaborate with the Long Island Museum and Lithology Brewing on this event as a part of our multi-year The Art of Edward Lange Project. Because of the importance of the artist’s body of work to local history and preservation efforts, we launched the project last year and have worked with local partners to develop public events and resources to help enrich our understanding of late nineteenth-century Long Island through Lange’s art,” said Alexandra Wolfe, Preservation Long Island Executive Director.

“Attending Artoberfest! at a historic site on Long Island, seeing the museum exhibition, and exploring our new interactive website of Lange’s artwork provide engaging opportunities for the public to learn more about this prolific artist and see Long Island through his eyes,” said Peter Fedoryk, Preservation Long Island Curatorial Fellow.

"When the LIM and PLI teams brainstormed about fresh ways to present Lange's artwork to the community, we were immediately on the same page," said Lisa Unander, Director of Education at the Long Island Museum. "Knowing the exhibition would be in our galleries, we turned our attention to finding ways to extend the reach beyond our doors and thought about the appeal of an all ages event that would combine music, food, beer and of course Lange's art. It was soon obvious that the Sherwood Jayne site would be the perfect backdrop. The best thing about a collaboration is that each organization can amplify what they do best and also be honest about their site's strengths and weaknesses. Being open to creative and different approaches is also essential and this is exactly how this partnership has unfolded. We can't wait to welcome long-time supporters as well as first time visitors to what we hope will become an annual Artoberfest!"
