Mount Sinai, NY - October 8th, 2013 - Suffolk County Police Sixth Precinct officers conducted directed traffic enforcement on County Road 83 in Coram and Mount Sinai this morning, citing more than two dozen drivers for various traffic infractions.
During the enforcement, 28 summonses were issued, including 16 violations of the Move Over Law and five speeding violations. Two drivers were also cited as unlicensed operators.
New York's Move Over Law (Section 1144-a of the New York Vehicle and Traffic Law) protects law enforcement officers, emergency workers, tow and service vehicle operators and other maintenance workers stopped along roadways while performing their duties.
The law requires that drivers must use care when approaching an emergency vehicle displaying emergency lighting. On all roads and highways, drivers must reduce speed. On parkways and other controlled-access highways with multiple lanes, when approaching an emergency vehicle, drivers must move from the lane immediately adjacent to the emergency or hazard vehicle, unless traffic or other hazards exist to prevent doing so safely.
